Janet Phillips is a weaver based in Somerset. She has been designing and weaving for over 40 years after studying industrial Textile Design at the Scottish College of Textiles. I attended her four day tailored weaving course in her studio in Nether Stowey to learn more technical and complex woven structures and patterns.

Janet’s beautiful studio is situated in her garden and I stayed in a little shared cottage next door with other weavers on the course. The course is tailored to your needs and she also has boxes of woven samples to look through for inspiration. I had a refresher on double cloth and learnt new techniques in extra weft, shadow weave, repp and Theo Moorman extra weft.

I also learnt how to apply my patterns and new structures onto my George Wood Loom in my studio. I found out that Janet had a loom made for her by George and she showed me some old photographs of her working on it.

Janet’s knowledge and skills in weaving are second to none. I was so impressed with how much I learnt over the course and being able to see what others were working on too. I am very much looking forward to weaving the new structures on my loom in my studio.
