Paper Cordage Workshops two

Over 100 people contributed their paper cord made during the workshops to create two woven pots.

The pots were formed in the same way a woven basket would be made. Each workshop the pots grew, taking shape and form. The nature of having different hands and people contribute to the pots meant that they formed organically. Rather than looking uniform, they became beautiful natural shapes resembling nests. Each workshop we used a range of types of waste paper which created different layers of patterns and textures within the paper nests.

The paper cordage workshops have run in The Round Tower, my studio at Hotwalls, the main gallery space at Aspex as part of ‘Communal’, and within the residency space at Aspex where I have been processing my flax.

The workshops provided a space for open conversations and sharing stories. Some people talked about their heritage and family history of textile. It was particularly interesting hearing diverse stories of how different countries were known for local textile industries and traditional techniques. Sadly, many of these techniques and industries are declining or lost.

Being able to listen to and connect with so many different people has really inspired and informed my project. It has made me think about different solutions and creative ways of helping the planet and building community.

I have done sewing in the past but not for personal interests but rather for necessities (patching up old clothes). I would like to see more opportunities for people to engage in different textiles and material workshops to get connected to nature

I really admire how you can create textiles with just the basics so it is more sustainable for our planet. It has opened my eyes to new skills and ideas. I will definitely be thinking more before I buy something with regards to how it is made and where it comes from
