HOW TO WARP YOUR LOOM

You will need scissors, your loom and a strong cotton, linen or string for your warp. I use this warp yarn from hobby craft (currently only available online) or outbackyarns coloured warp both 100% cotton, really strong and smooth. Any other cotton or string works too as long as its sturdy. You can also purchase at Ann Louise Shop, Copnor Road, Portsmouth.

I always double up my warp so the weave is stronger and finer. You can keep it as a single warp with a thicker string or if you are using a different loom.

To start choose the width you would like your weave, if you want a full weave start on the last notch and if you want a small weave start on a notch nearer the middle.

With your warp string hook it in the notch, with the long string at the front and the cut end length out the back.

Then bring the cut end round to the left and across the left notch. Using both the lengths tie a double knot making sure the knot is on the notch you chose.

If you are making a full width weave double knot on the last notch like above, or if you want a smaller width start on a middle notch like below.

With the cut end length guide it out the back on the notch so it is out the way and cut it shorter if its too long. You will now take the long length and bring it down to the same notch at the bottom.

As you warp it is important to keep an even tension so all the strings are equal in strength, none are too loose and none are too tight and still have a spring to them. Remember as you weave the warp gets tighter so do not worry if your warp is loose, keeping them all even is the most important.

Bring the warp yarn round the back and pull it through the next notch working inward, so you are always bringing the warp string to the front of the loom. Keep going until you get to your chosen width notch the other side.

Turn the loom over and make sure all the warp strings are hooked on securely so they do not pop off when you weave.

To tie off bring the length round the next notch, cut it and then double knot to the previous warp string.

If you have been to my workshops before and have a hume loom we will be doubling the warp. To do this you are going to do the same again.

With a new length pull it through the same notch and starting place from last time. Bring the short cut end round the back and double knot again on top of the previous knot.

With the length guide it down to the bottom notch making sure the strings are parallel and sitting side by side to each other, with no twisting.

If the string naturally lands on the left put it on the left hand side of the string at the bottom. It does not matter if it is left or right as long as the strings are always matching at the top and bottom.

Keep warping the string until you get to the other side and then bring the cut end round to the last notch and double knot. You can double knot to both strings if it is easier or the new single warp.

Your warp is now ready to start weaving.
