Pause Reflect Create
Pause Reflect Create is a project funded by Arts Council England and supported by Portsmouth City Council to commission the Hotwalls Studios Artists to create an art piece in response to the pandemic.
The pieces were exhibited in the Round Tower and will be a permanent part of the Portsmouth Museum Collections.
For my piece called ‘within’ I created a mixed media Textile Wall Hanging, handwoven on my Harris Floor Loom with hand embroidery. Making the entire piece from hand with no machinery has been the most healing experience.
The embroidery represents what I have learnt during the pandemic, such as slowing down, appreciating nature and working within. Symbols of flowers, my left hand, earth, nature and local places in Portsmouth. The sun and vases are inspired by the local church in Milton graveyard, which I had never visited before. The flowers are from my garden, home grown tomato leaves and tulips.
Photographer Alex Fountain took photographs and film of the piece in progress in my studio.
